Meetings are open to the public, and stakeholders include anyone who is interested in or affected by forest health issues, including collaborative, fire safe councils, and economic development organizations, just to name a few. The Coordinating Council was first convened on November 30, 2011 and is anticipated to continue as long as its work is needed and supports the SNFCI. Most meetings take place in Auburn, though field trips are hosted in various sites throughout the Sierra of interest to the group. The Coordinating Council’s efforts are designed to support the entirety of the Sierra Nevada Region.

The Sierra Nevada Conservancy (SNC) initiated and convenes this group to identify and address issues affecting forest health, fire and related economic development. Generally speaking, the Coordinating Council focuses on policy, investment and science and research issues that affect the success of the SNFCI. Specifically, the Coordinating Council is working actively in partnership with Region 5 Forest Service leadership in the following five focus areas, in order to increase the pace and scale of restoration in our forested lands: steep ground technology; Increasing the use of fire as a restoration tool; support of wood processing infrastructure; promoting landscape level treatments; and promoting local economies through local contracting tools. This work is designed to support and inform local collaborative efforts as they convene, identify issues, develop projects and secure funds to implement projects and processes in local areas in support of the Initiative’s goals.  The two co-chairs are Bill Nunes,  former Sierra County Supervisor, and Steve Wilensky, former Calaveras County Supervisors (both former Boardmembers of the SNC). The members of the Coordinating Council include:
